In the classical tradition of Japanese tea ceremony, the bowl does not simply hold matcha – it holds the season. The hira-chawan (平茶碗), wide and shallow, was created for summer. Its broad mouth lets the heat rise and escape, inviting you to slow down in the
warmth, to drink without urgency, to be present in the ritual the way summer demands.

This bowl carries the clematis.

The tessen (鉄線) , the iron wire flower has been a motif of Japanese summer ceramics for centuries. Its name comes from the strength of its climbing stem, thin as wire, capable of bearing the weight of a full bloom. In the language of Japanese aesthetics, it represents quiet persistence: beauty that does not announce itself, that arrives on its own schedule and disappears just as gently.

Made in the Kyo-yaki tradition by 弘艸 (Koso), a Kyoto studio working in the refined, painterly style that defines the classical ceramics of the imperial capital. The clematis is rendered in overglaze colour (色絵), applied by hand after the first firing and
returned to the kiln, a technique that requires precision, patience, and the understanding that the final result belongs to the fire as much as the maker.

The palette is restrained: soft greens, quiet blues, white blooms against a pale ground. It is the colour of a summer morning before the heat arrives.

The bowl comes in its original wooden box (共箱), signed by the studio. It is a piece made to be used, and made to be kept.

To prepare matcha in this bowl is to bring the season into your hands. To feel summer as the tea masters intended it: unhurried, deliberate, and quietly extraordinary.
