Black has always known something the other colours don’t.

In the late 16th century, Sen no Rikyū asked a tile-maker named Chōjirō to create a bowl without
decoration, without ornament, without anything that was not necessary. What came from the kiln was kuro-raku — a black so deep it seems to hold darkness rather than reflect it. Rikyū understood immediately: this was not absence. This was presence at its most absolute.

Five centuries later, the tradition continues in Kyoto’s studios, passed down not through family
lineage alone but through the act of making — hand forming clay, applying iron glaze by brush, firing alone at low temperature, and letting the kiln decide the rest.

Made by Juho (寿峰), a Kyoto-based ceramist working in the classical kuro-raku tradition. The bowl is hand-formed — tezukuri (手造り) — meaning no wheel was involved. Each rotation of the hands, each compression of the clay, left its trace in the form.
The walls are gently irregular. The mouth opens slightly wider than it appears to. In the hand, the weight is quieter than you expect.

The glaze is iron-black, applied by hand and darkened through reduction firing. Where the brush
moved slowly, the colour deepens. Where it lifted early, the surface shifts. No two places are exactly the same.

The bowl comes in its original wooden box (共箱), signed by the maker.

To hold this bowl is to hold something that was made to disappear into the ritual — and to notice, in that disappearing, exactly how present it is.
