Ivy does not choose where it grows. It simply continues.

In the classical language of Japanese motifs, the ivy (蔦, tsuta) carries a meaning that no other plant quite holds. It clings to what it finds – stone walls, ancient timber, the rough bark of trees that have stood longer than memory and it grows. Not quickly. Not dramatically. But without stopping. Season after season, it deepens its hold and extends its reach, and in doing so becomes part of the surface it covers.

In the tea ceremony, this quality has always been admired. The ivy is an autumn motif – it appears in classical poetry alongside the harvest moon and the first cold wind, but its deeper meaning is about time. About the things that endure not through strength but through patience.

Wajima lacquerware has been made since the sixteenth century in the small town of Wajima, on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture. What makes Wajima exceptional is not decoration alone. It is known for its exceptional durability, created through a complex process involving diatomite powder (jinoko) mixed into
the base layers. Layer upon layer of lacquer is applied and polished, each coat hardening before the next arrives, until the surface achieves a depth that ordinary lacquer cannot reach.

Then the maki-e artist takes over. Working with lacquer and fine metal powder, leaf by leaf the ivy is placed onto the bamboo – each stroke considered, each leaf slightly different from the last, in the way that real ivy has never produced two leaves exactly alike.

Made by Hōgetsu (峰月), a craftsperson working in the Wajima lacquer tradition. The bamboo body is lacquered to a warm depth; the ivy leaves trail across the surface in maki-e, their form suggesting movement even in stillness. The scoop is 18 cm in length, a formal proportion, suited to both koicha and usucha.

The piece comes in its original wooden box (共箱). The tip shows slight wear from use – the mark of a chashaku that has actually lived inside a tea ceremony, that has touched matcha, that has been held with attention. In the philosophy of wabi-cha, this is not a flaw. It is evidence.

Some tools arrive perfect and stay that way. Others arrive already knowing what they are for.
