Everything in the tea ceremony has a reason.

The chashaku exists for one moment.

The tea scoop (茶杓, chashaku) is perhaps the most intimate object in the ritual. It is held for seconds. It carries no more than a gram of matcha. And yet, in the hands of a tea master, it is considered the most personal of all utensils – more revealing of the maker’s sensibility than any bowl, any whisk, any vessel.

Sen no Rikyū carved his own tea scoops from bamboo. He gave them names. He wrote poems about them. He understood that the smallest gesture, repeated with full attention, was where the ceremony lived.

Carved by 松喜斎 (Shokisai), a Kyoto craftsperson working in the classical tradition, from ichiisashi (一位) – Japanese yew (Taxus cuspidata). This wood has been used for tea scoops for centuries: its fine, close grain allows for exceptional precision, its warm reddish-brown deepens with age and handling, and its natural density gives the scoop a quiet weight that bamboo cannot replicate.

At 8.9 cm, the proportions are classical. The curve of the scoop is carved by hand, measured by eye, finished by feel. No two are identical. This one is signed and comes in its original wooden box (共箱) – the mark of a craftsperson who considered the
work complete.

To add this chashaku to your ritual is to add intention to the smallest motion. The moment the scoop meets the matcha. The transfer from tin to bowl. The pause before the whisk begins.

That moment deserves the right tool.

Only one exists.
